Zumba is Colombian slang meaning to move fast and have fun.

Alberto “Beto” Perez is the creator of Zumba®.  Beto, a native of Colombia, is the founder of Zumba ® and director of the national Zumba ® Master Trainer Team.  He is also a celebrity choreographer and professional dancer, having choreographed for celebrities like Shakira.

Beto invented Zumba ® in the mid-’90s in his native Cali, Colombia.  Beginning with an improvised aerobics class using traditional Latin salsa and merengue, Beto began his development of Zumba ®.

Following his success in Colombia, Beto moved to Miami and began teaching Zumba ® classes.

In 2001, Beto teamed up with entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion to create a global company based on the Zumba ® Fitness philosophy.

Fast forward to today- five million people take classes every week from 30,000 certified instructors in 75 countries, from Canada to China.

More than four million DVDs have been sold, and Zumbawear ® is more popular than ever.

Alberto “Beto” Perez is now Creative Director of the privately held Zumba Fitness, LLC.

The Zumba ® Program is recognized by the America’s leading fitness educators, including the Aerobic Fitness Association of America (AFAA), IDEA Health and Fitness Association, and the American Council on Exercise (ACE).

Zumba Fitness ® is headquartered in Hollywood, Florida.
